Note

(Notes from Dorothy Cross) Illegitimate (Father's name not recorded on Birth Certificate).

  • Named on 1871 Census as Isabella McCallum
  • Possibly named as Isabella Malcolm on 1881 census (sounds similar to "McCallum.")
  • Interestingly she was named as Isabella Mercer Burgess, not Burgess Mercer, on the Marriage Certificate so whether she changed it round for some reason I don't know, but my Gran's sister Isabella Mercer Burgess Bogie was named after her in 1892.
  • They may have met through Mercer family ties because in 1891 James Hepburn was a lodger at Rosie Street, Wemyss in the household of Stephen Peggie and his wife Janet Mercer, Isabella's Aunt. The John Hepburn also living in the same house was James's uncle.
