Hugh enlisted in
the Wicklow Rifles militia in November 1854 signing up at Rathdrum Towm. He
transferred to the Royal Artillary in Dublin in January 1855. He was still
based at the Dublin barracks when he married Ann Mercer in 1858. Hugh was
in the Crimea where he received medals for the battle of Sebastapol and the
Turkish medal. He served for nearly eight years in India and Burma being
discharged just befor the birth of daughter Martha in Burma in 1876. His
physical description is given as 5ft 6in; black hair; dark complexion and
hazel eyes with a well built physique.

poetry, some of which he managed to get published. He was also writing a
book on past Inverkeithing when he died of a massive stroke at the age of
62.
