Isabella Burgess Mercer was born
in Halbeath, Dunfermline, Fife and lived all of her life in the county.
When she left school she found employment as a domestic
servant in Beath. At the age of 22 she was employed as a Flax-mill worker
and was living at Haughmill, Markinch, Fife.
It was at this time that she married John Scott from
Burntisland. John was also a factory worker in his early adolescence but
spent most of his life in the Fife coal pits. John and Isabella were
married at Haughmill and had a traditional Church of Scotland marriage
ceremony conducted by Rev. James Clark from Milton of
Balgonie, Markinch.
They had four children.
Isabella developed diabetes in middle age. This led to
gangrene and to her untimely death in 1925 at the age of 61.
